Plant Breeding Team Lead - Agricultural Research - Coastal Mid-North WA
The Opportunity
This is a hands-on leadership position responsible for coordinating the successful delivery of the businesses plant-breeding trial program. You will lead a field-based team through the full seasonal trial cycle—from site preparation and seeding through to crop management, assessments and harvest.
The role requires someone who can understand research requirements, convert them into practical field plans and ensure the right people, equipment and inputs are in place at the right time. You will remain actively involved in field operations while providing the structure, leadership and direction required to keep multiple trials moving safely, accurately and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and working closely with the Managing Director, you will:
Plan and coordinate plant-breeding trials from establishment through to harvest.
Translate trial protocols into clear and practical field activities.
Coordinate trial sites, seasonal schedules, equipment, inputs and team resources.
Lead seeding, crop-management, assessment and harvesting operations.
Allocate daily work according to team capability, workload and project priorities.
Monitor trial progress and identify operational risks, delays or resource constraints early.
Ensure trials are delivered accurately, safely and within agreed timeframes.
Maintain high standards of trial integrity, recordkeeping, traceability and data quality.
Oversee the preparation, operation and maintenance of specialist trial equipment.
Train, mentor and develop employees across plant-breeding and field-research activities.
Support the recruitment, induction and development of new team members.
Build a positive, accountable and collaborative team culture.
Communicate regularly with management regarding workflow, project progress and seasonal priorities.
Contribute ideas that improve systems, field efficiency, equipment utilisation and research delivery.
Assist with client communication, site visits and the presentation of research work where required.
About You
You will be a practical agricultural professional who enjoys working in the field but is equally motivated by leading people, improving systems and delivering quality research.
You will ideally bring:
Experience in plant breeding, agricultural field trials, agronomy, crop research or a closely related field.
A sound understanding of broadacre cropping systems and seasonal field operations.
Experience coordinating seeding, spraying, crop assessments or harvesting activities.
Demonstrated experience leading, supervising or mentoring a field-based team.
Strong planning skills and the ability to coordinate several trials and competing seasonal priorities.
Confidence allocating work, setting expectations and holding team members accountable.
Practical experience operating, maintaining or coordinating agricultural and trial equipment.
Strong attention to detail and a commitment to research accuracy and data integrity.
The ability to interpret research protocols and translate them into effective field plans.
Sound communication, organisation and problem-solving skills.
A strong commitment to workplace safety, chemical stewardship and professional integrity.
A current driver licence and willingness to travel to trial sites as required.
A qualification in agricultural science, agronomy, plant breeding or a related discipline would be highly regarded. However, Crop Circle will also consider applicants with substantial practical field-trial and team-leadership experience.
